Top 4 innovations in the mining industry

1- Mining simulators :

Simulators place workers in practical situations that they are likely to encounter on a typical shift, including emergency situations, to ensure that their responses are accurate and appropriate. Simulators are also great teaching tools for identifying knowledge and skill gaps, especially when you’re using external contractors. This greatly reduces the risks associated with exposure to hazardous environments that have not yet been known.

2- Management of subcontractors :

Mining companies used to directly employ hundreds of workers in a mine. Technology and industrial developments have changed that practice. Mining companies now rely a great deal more on contractors to do the work on their sites.

3-Underground Telecommunications :

Until the advent of wireless technology, communication between miners used mostly whistles. Today, workers have access to a wireless network thousands of feet underground and use Skype-like phones to communicate not only with each other but also with a control site above ground. Emergency response coordination is now safer and more effective through underground communications.

4- Staff control :

A few years ago, in order to know who was in the mine, workers heading underground had to put a personalized identification token on a board before entering and remove it once they returned. Today, radio frequency identification – RFID is secured on workers’ uniforms in order to easily find out their location in real-time. It eliminates site downtimes, human errors, and unnecessary search and rescue operations. And since the location of a minor is always known, emergency response is faster, which saves valuable time in case of an incident.
