Automation: The future of mining
Automation: a hot topic in the mining industry
Growing efforts are being made to roll out automation across the mining industry as firms seek to embrace the technology to improve safety and efficiency standards.
The advantages of automation :
1- Remote monitoring and control of equipment :
Remote monitoring and control of equipment allow miners to automate industrial processes like blasting, drilling, and transportation. The new, automated equipment used to perform these tasks is faster, more accurate, and can cover more area in less time. Efficiencies are gained through continuous, consistent operations, improved communications, and reduced infrastructure. Mine site safety can be improved by removing personnel from dangerous environments and placing them in remote control rooms where they can operate equipment from a safe distance.
2- Improving safety in the mining industry :
Worker safety is a major issue for mines, which are often very dangerous workplaces for people.
Automation of mobile equipment, such as trucks, in mines, and the ability to perform wireless remote surveys remove the need for human presence on-site, greatly increasing worker safety work. The predictive analysis and understanding, enabled by IO solutions, also enables mine operators to better predict and prevent any hazardous incident, such as a dam failure.
3- Ensure data security :
Mining companies are generally very protective of their data, they must be able to check this information in the event of an incident or accident. Digitizing their mining processes presents risks in terms of hackers who could break into the system and control mine operations. However, reliable, experienced, and smart mining companies usually ensure that a mine’s data is well-protected and secure.
4- Reduce operational costs :
Wireless monitoring can be used to create “smart mines” that have much lower operating costs than their “analog” predecessors. Smart mines are basically those whose main assets are digitized by embedded sensors that transmit the data to a central system via a wireless network. Miners can thus save money not only on human labor since people no longer need to physically take data readings on site but also because there is no need for expensive wiring and therefore cable maintenance.
Automation within the mining sector aims to generate an increase in the operational efficiency of companies, through the digitalization and automation of their operations. In this way, it will be possible to optimize work, have greater productivity, reduce costs, reduce or eliminate risks, optimize the time of execution of tasks and obtain better safety in work carried out inside mines.
All this is possible with Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT), control the processes and areas, in order to obtain optimal and safe operations became possible with modern technological tools.
