The different types of mines

The exploitation of a deposit can be done in two distinct ways. There are surface mines and underground mines, the choice of the type of mine depends on various factors such as the depth of the deposit, the footprint, and the costs of extraction.

  • The depth of the deposit: If the deposit is closer to the surface of the ground, an open pit mine will be preferred.
  • The footprint on the ground (the visible trace left by the mine): The idea is to minimize the environmental impact. For example, if the mine is located in a wildlife reserve, the underground mine will be preferred.
  • Mining costs: If the amount of overburden (or topsoil and waste rock) to be removed is too great, it increases costs. We will therefore favor the underground mine.

Surface mine :

In an open-pit mine, a spiral pit is dug and benches two to fifteen meters are formed which will be blasted to extract the ore, which will be loaded by shovels and transported to the concentrator by huge trucks that can hold hundreds of tons of ore. Surface mines are often compared to worlds of giants, because there is oversized machinery and because the size of a pit can be very surprising.

Underground mine :

Visually, an underground mine can look like an anthill. In reality, it is an immense network of vertical and horizontal tunnels making it possible to reach the mining deposit. Once mined, the ore will be brought to the surface through the shaft and sent to the concentrator.

Inside an underground mine, there are:

Access ramp: A large spiral tunnel that communicates with all levels of the mine.

Galleries: Long tunnels that lead to the deposit to be extracted.

Access shaft: A vertical passage used to lower equipment and machinery underground, transport personnel and bring ore to the surface.

Ventilation shaft: This serves to ensure ventilation, filtration, and control of the temperature and quality of the air in the galleries.
