The mining life cycle
Even if each new mining project has its own requirements and requires an individual and personalized plan , almost all miners follow the same general process , here are the steps :
1. Exploration and feasibility :
It’s the first step in this cycle, which includes research, field studies, and analyzing information to determine where the minerals are located.
2. Development and construction
The second step of the cycle is development and construction, which includes more research and analysis. Getting government permits is the most important part in the step to start mine operations. Once the development step is complete, construction of the mine and its ore processing facilities can proceed.
3. Mining operations
The third step is mining operations, where the rock is extracted from the ground, and precious minerals are separated from the rocks and treated. The duration of this step depends on the amount of ore in the mine.
4. Closing and restoration
The last step in a mine’s life cycle is closing and restoration. These are two reasons for closing a mine:
- The ore is depleted
- Low metal prices make operations unprofitable
This step includes completing mining operations, removing all buildings, and restoring vegetation on the ground.
