Women in mining
Women are underrepresented at all levels within mining companies. Yet opportunities remain for the industry to boost female recruitment, retention, and advancement.
Women account for about 8-17% of the global mining workforce. In addition to low labor force participation, the drop in entry-to-executive levels for women in mining is among the most dramatic of all industries.
Still a big challenge to encourage women to join the mining industry. In this blog, we will look at why this goal is so important and what can be done to make it easier for women to work in mining.
Reasons for the lack of women’s participation in the mining industry :
1- the wage gap:
this is the average gross hourly wage difference between women and men.
This explains the low earnings of women in the mining sector.
2- Maternity rights:
Maternity rights are not fully defined by law and, on some occasions, there have even been abusive dismissals related to this issue.
3- Working hours:
Working hours in mining operations are not easily aligned with personal life, especially with household tasks and types of care traditionally associated with women.
Why do women leave the mining industry ? :
Women report leaving or wanting to leave the industry because the qualities that initially attracted them to the field are no longer attractive. The main reasons for leaving the industry are the feeling that work is no longer an intellectual challenge and the perception that there are fewer opportunities for advancement than for their male colleagues.
Why is it important for women to work in this sector ? :
1- Increasing demand:
There is a growing demand for skilled labor in industry and, therefore, encouraging people of all genders and backgrounds to join the sector can help meet this demand.
2- Diversity brings balance:
diversity brings benefits such as team building and balance between different jobs. Women are able to bring different ideas to the table, new approaches, and some unique values.
3- Gender equality:
the inclusion of more women in the mining sector is essential in terms of competitiveness as it improves profitability levels. Women in the labor market promote the growth and stability of societies.
Solutions to increase the presence of women in mines :
– Create diverse workplaces where all workers can feel safe: To ensure safety within the company Regardless of gender and position.
– Offer flexible work alternatives with women-friendly working hours
– Building a culture of non-discrimination: preventing sexual harassment and discrimination
– Finding a solution for the wage gap: proposing ways to improve the situation
In conclusion, there is still a challenge to encourage women to join the mining industry. We hope to find solutions to ensure gender equality and to allow women to reveal their capacities in this field .
